Music

Ah, music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here!”

- Albus Dumbledore -

Our curriculum aims for students to finish KS3 with a greater understanding of music, how it is made, and how it fits into its cultural landscape. We also hope that other skills will be built on during the process – teamwork, gross and fine motor skills, timing, and communication – all essential skills for musicians.

Groups are taught a progressive curriculum following a logical path where each year builds on the next.

Y1 focuses on musical elements, musical language, and how to engage with music in its cultural context.

Y2 expands use of musical language and builds on an understanding of cultural aspects of music as well as introducing practical skills in music production and recording

Y3 Builds those practical skills and introduces composition, consolidating learning from the previous years.

If students find music to be an exciting or rewarding topic for them there is the option to study it in KS4 or sixth form, either by taking instrument lessons or enrolling in a course of further study.

Music lessons at Great Oaks are an opportunity for students to engage practically with music and garner an appreciation and understanding of why and how music is created, how music works, and to make some music of their own. They are taught with a workshop style that is accessible to all, with group listening activities, ensemble work, drum circles, and games.
